| Day 1 | Our action-packed week starts with dinner
together on Saturday evening, followed by a
chat about the coming week.
|
| Days 2-7 | From our base in Dulnain Bridge, near
Grantown-on-Spey, there is plenty to
see close to home and we may start with a walk
down the river, or visit the beautiful pine forest
nearby. Here, amongst the ancient pines, we shall
search out delightful Crested Tit and parties of
crossbill - which we’ll need to check carefully, as
Common and Scottish Crossbills are possible -
though identification can be a serious challenge.
Redstarts, Tree Pipits, Siskins and countless Willow
Warblers are singing in the forest clearings and
Cuckoos call from the wooded slopes. Red
Squirrels scamper through the branches and we’ll
visit our own baited hide for fabulous close-up views of Badgers and hopefully Pine Martens too.
An early start one morning takes us to see Black
Grouse as they strut, bubble and flutter at each
other. It is a wonderful sight to see.
Nearby lochans hold beautiful Slavonian Grebes,
with golden plumes in their breeding finery. This is
a great time of year to see Osprey - just returning
to nest, with the chance of Golden Eagle too and
in recent years sightings of White-tailed Eagles
have increased locally.
The Black Isle and Moray Coast have a few of the
Long-tailed Duck, Scaup and perhaps Common
and Velvet Scoters that winter here amongst the
Eiders, while Purple Sandpiper may be on rockier
coasts. We’ll visit Udale Bay, where passage waders
may include a few Knot, Bar-tailed Godwit and
other waders. Flocks of wintering Pink-footed Geese, plus perhaps a few Wigeon, Teal and with
luck Pintail, may still be lingering before they head
north and we’ll look out for farmland birds such as
Tree Sparrow and Yellowhammer.
We’ll make a special effort to see the resident
group of Bottlenose Dolphins at a headland
on the Black Isle, where they can often come
remarkably close to shore as they hunt fish moving
in on the rising tide - with luck perhaps we’ll see
some acrobatics!
One evening we have the exciting chance to see
Scotland’s newest mammal - European Beaver.
Introduced locally they are doing well and are
showing regularly at certain sites. We shall learn
how they are affecting the landscape and hopefully
get to see one or two as they come out to feed
at dusk. Using a bat detector we shall see what
species are flitting around the trees - Pipistrelle is
most likely, but other species such as Daubenton’s
are possible too.
In nearby Highland straths we’ll keep an eye
on the sky for hunting Golden Eagle, Red Kite
or Peregrine. Raven pass overhead and Dipper
breed in the fast flowing rivers, Wheatear will
have arrived on the slopes and we hope for Hen
Harrier or displaying Red Grouse as we scan
for Red Deer and Mountain Hares. Weather
permitting we’ll venture into the Cairngorms using
the funicular railway to search for Ptarmigan and
other wildlife that can be seen on the mountain
slopes, with chances of newly arrived Ring Ouzel
near the base station.
We’ll have a wonderful day amidst the dramatic
mountain peaks and shores of the West Coast. As
we drive west, the scenery becomes more and
more impressive and the beach at Mellon Udrigle
is beautiful and so peaceful. It is a great chance
to see Great Northern, Red-throated and Blackthroated
Divers in breeding plumage just offshore,
before they move to their nesting sites.
Wild Rock Doves nest on the cliffs and we’ll look
out for Ravens, Hooded Crow, Twite and Black
Guillemot, plus Common Seals loafing on the
rocks. Along the seaweed strewn shoreline we’ll
search for Otters as they hunt for butterfish and
crabs, while another big target here is the resident
White-tailed Eagles - huge and impressive as they
soar over Scottish Islands. With so much to see -
it’ll be a busy week!

"Dolphins with salmon was a highlight. Golden Eye. Beaver habitat. Good peaceful walks along river when we took a day off the main group activities" Derek Capes
|
"The Black Grouse in the early morning with the sunlight glinting on their feathers & their strange calls drifting across the moorland. The Dipper at Black Water Falls ducking into the water & going over the falls before flying back up stream to start again. The most unexpected sight of two black Water Voles feeding on the bank of a stream near the funicular car park on Cairngorm. The stunning views from the viewing platform on a beautifully clear day out to the Moray Firth in the east and Ben Nevis in the west.
Waiting more than ten minutes near a particular tree at Loch Garten to spot a Crested Tit. Watching two Black-throated Divers in fine summer plumage snorkelling close by on Lochindorb" Christine Shawyer
|
"My highlight was walking to the top of the Cairngorms from the funicular and seeing Ptarmigan, Dotterel and Snow Bunting" Margaret Glasgow
|
"Wonderful beach on West coast. Seeing Snow Bunting on top of Cairngorms which was a first for me" Tessa Oliver
|
"Interaction with Badger and Pine Marten at hide. Red Squirrels at hotel and R.S.P.B Loch Spiny. Regular sightings of Osprey (fishing) and W.T.Eagles" Eileen Knight
|
"Mellon Udrigle. Black Grouse on the lek. Slovenian Grebe. Findhorn valley. Cairngorm. Mountain Hares in an unexpected place - on the way to Elgin, we think" David and Christine Merritt
|
"A couple of unusual sightings - a large group of Brown Hare and one individual in Kishorn
Valley - the latter, disturbed and promptly demonstrated how fast he could run. The view of
two Beaver on the bank of the lochan. Viewed standing on the opposite bank - no hide
needed. Finally, the gradually improving weather, the West Coast and Cairngorm days were
really superb" John Duerden
|
"Too many to mention! Something special every day" Celia and Tony Barnby
|
"Pine Martens, Beavers, Osprey, White-tailed Eagle, Golden Plover, Black Grouse etc!" Lynda Niccolls
|
"Red Squirrels every day. Dolphins, Ospreys, Slavonian Grebes. Excellent food and a great group of people to be with" Peter & Jannette Warden
|
"Scotland is beautiful and we were so fortunate with the weather, sitting out at Laide Jetty in brilliant sunshine for lunch and seeing an Otter come on to the rocks near us was wonderful. The eagles were a little distant but set in the grandeur of the Cairngorm Mountains they looked just perfect and how Sally was able to spot them so quickly was amazing. Loved the evening visit to the Badger hide and the many sightings of Osprey especially on the nests was fabulous" Jean Brown
|
"There are always surprises. This time a Short-eared Owl flypast at the end of the final day and an Otter at Laide" John Duerden
|
"Pine Marten hide. Seeing the Snow Bunting at the top of the Cairngorm. Visiting very different areas of natural beauty." Anne & Malcolm Hopkins
|
"Drinking mulled wine in the Ptarmigan Cafe on Cairngorms and watching 2 Ptarmigan and a Snow Bunting just outside the window! Spotting a White-tailed Eagle as it flew round some Pine trees on West coast....best view I have ever had of a "flying barn door". Brilliant!" Eileen Knight
|
"I loved the trip over to the West Coast, for the beautiful scenery en route, the beautiful coastline and the birds and mammals that we saw there. Seeing the Crested Tits nesting was also fantastic, and the many Siskin in their bright colours were stunning." Clare Watston
|
"Findhorn Valley (Deer herd & flock of golden plovers), Good sightings of Crossbill's, Badgers at the Hide, Seeing Crested Tits at their nest sight." John Robinson
|
"I had never been in a blizzard before. That was only one of the many wonderful moments." John Bescoby
|
"Trip up funicular on last day when the sun shone and the snow and rain stopped. Seeing divers, Crested Tit, Crossbills and Ring Ouzel." Viki Ahearn
|
"The immediate area around the Steading was really marvellous for birds on our first morning.
Pine Martens (first time) close dolphins and Harbour Porpoises, breeding Slavonian Grebes, Gruinard Bay with lots of 3 species of divers including some in breeding plummage, very close sustained views of a White-tailed Eagle flying and a lifer White-billed Diver, unexpected pleasure. I come most years for the scenery and birds." Eve Wee
|
"Seeing the Slavonian Grebes in breeding plumage, the Pine Martens at the hide, the sea eagle appear and soar over us in a timely way and similarly the Osprey fishing coincident with our final stop of the last day. Doesn't get much better (except perhaps surprisingly seeing the Yellow-billed Diver too.)" Chris Piper
|
"The Pine Martens were fantastic close-up, probably most people's favourite. Also, Long-tailed Ducks, Slavonian Grebe in breeding plumage, Osprey taking a fish and me finding a local rarity - White-billed Diver - not that I knew it at the time! The landscapes were special as well, particularly on the west coast." Paul Bennett
