Days 1-2 | Arriving in Vancouver we transfer to our hotel in Delta. The following day we enjoy a full day at George C. Reifel Bird Sanctuary, where Sandhill Crane, Wood Duck, dowitchers and yellowlegs, Red-winged Blackbird, Northern Harrier and Lincoln’s Sparrow are all possible. It is a fabulous and very productive place alive with great birds. We may also take a walk along Boundary Bay, looking for more shorebirds in an area that can be good for other birds too - this may prove to be the most bird-rich day of the entire trip and a great start.
|
Days 3-5 | After checking the bays enroute to the Nanaimo ferry, we board the ferry and check the jetties for Black Turnstone and with luck, Surfbird. We’ll watch out for wildlife on the crossing then have a long drive north to our ocean front lodge overlooking Johnstone Strait. The grounds are a haven for wildlife and we have watched Black Bears turning rocks on the shore here and, with luck, other mammals such as River Otter and American Mink. We can relax, or wander in search of White-crowned and Fox Sparrows, warblers and woodpeckers in the surrounding woodland.
We have a boat ride into rich waters covered in gulls, Common and Pigeon Guillemots, Rhinoceros Auklets and dainty Red-necked Phalaropes. Watched by tree top Bald Eagles, this is our best chance for Orcas and we hope to encounter resident groups at close quarters! Dall’s Porpoise and Steller’s Sea Lions are here too and we hope for Pacific White-sided Dolphins. Even if we don’t see Orcas, we’ll be thrilled by great sightings of Humpback Whales! Another day will be spent locally in search of more wildlife and visiting Telegraph Cove - a picturesque village on the seafront nearby, with some nice shops and a wildlife museum and the chance of Black-tailed Deer or perhaps even Elk enroute.
|
Day 6 | We move on to Zeballos on a scenic west coast inlet, an old Gold-rush village. An oasis of gardens and decidous trees and bushes surrounded by a sea of confiers, it can draw in migrants and we have seen Cedar Waxwing, Western Tanager, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Varied Thrush and warblers such as Wilson’s, Townsend, Black-and-Grey and Yellow-rumped are possible. It is a chance to feel you are on the remote west side of the island and provides a chance to see Beavers on a nearby pond.
|
Days 7-9 | After breakfast we head for Campbell River, a great area for birding, with shorebirds, Harlequin Duck, Bonaparte’s Gull, grebes and divers, plus Red-breasted Sapsucker in the trees. We’ll also visit the sub-alpine forest of Mount Washington in search of tame Gray Jay, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, woodpeckers, tanagers and more.
There is lots to see, but we’ll tear ourselves away because there’s the lure of Grizzly Bears! We’ll have a full-day, heading across by boat to a picturesque inlet, where guides will take us to purpose-built viewing platforms. We hope for great close-up views as the bears walk the banks, or down the middle of the river, scanning the water for any hint of a fish to chase - then it’s a mad dash, with the occasional bear even being successful!
|
Days 10-12 | It is a long and spectacular drive to Tofino on the west coast and we’ll break the journey to enjoy the astonishing trees of Cathedral Grove and visit a beautiful river to watch Chinook Salmon migrate upstream and leap the falls! From our hotel in Tofino we’ll visit Pacific Rim National Park - lush temperate rainforest, with cushions of moss on branches of towering Hemlocks, vast beaches and the ocean stretching off as far as the eye can see.
The forest can be quiet, with Pacific Wren, Steller’s Jay and Chestnut-backed Chickadees often the only birds, but still worth the visit. Beaches may hold flocks of Western Sandpipers, while offshore are Red-necked Grebes, Surf Scoter, Pacific Loons and Marbled Murrelet.
We have two exciting boat trips here! We’ll head into Clayoquot Sound for Gray Whales, or Humpbacks if the Gray Whales have left, plus huge Steller’s Sea Lions. The follwing day we’ll search for Sea Otters, hoping for close-up views and some great birding too. Amidst the maze of rocky islets, there’ll be Brandt’s and Pelagic Cormorants, Heermann’s Gull, Rhinoceros Auklet and Pigeon Guillemots, Black Oystercatcher and maybe Wandering Tattler.
|
Days 13-15 | We head back to Vancouver, where we overnight in Delta again. On the following day we may have time for another visit to Boundary Bay, before dragging ourselves away for our flight home in the afternoon, arriving in London on Day 15.

"For me, Hidden Cove was a highlight as it is rare to find such a wonderful venue in our modern world. I love to see new (to me) animals and was excited to see Grey Whales, Stellar Sea Lions and Sea Otters. A lot of birds were new to me too but in particular I enjoyed the Caspian Tern which I should have seen before but had always failed, the woodpeckers and the jays. I loved the chickadees, juncos and kinglets. The towee was a bonus too. Darren's help in differentiating between the gulls was a great help. All the sea trips were special! Seeing the Grizzlies emerging from the woods and fishing and later watching a young Black Bear trying to catch a fish on the salmon run were all highlights. It was an excellent trip" Sheila Ford

"Jaw-dropping scenery, magical forest trails, amazing wildlife encounters - a wonderful trip! One of the many highlights for me was seeing Grey Whales for the first time and my magic moment was when one surfaced right by the boat. Thank you Speyside Wildlife for yet another fabulous trip" Joan Hunter

"All the boat trips. Especially Bute Inlet and seeing Grizzly bears catch salmon. Hidden Cove and watching Black bears on the beach. Zeballos boat trip and Sea Otters. Visits to George Reiffel Sanctuary at Delta for sheer variety of birds. I loved the humming birds" Sue Jenkins

"We loved the wildlife and came back with 4,700+ photographs (even a new species of a two headed bird, taken by Jules with David's camera, when we weren't feeling too well on a boat trip). Roy and Julian are both very expert guides who always make sure everybody sees everything that's about (including German tourists and a small lad who loved the telescope). We were a little unfortunate with the weather in Zeballos, but it didn't dampen our enthusiasm, although the equipment let us down (Franky's camera stopped working for a couple of days). The guides on the boats were both knowledgeable and experts in their respective fields, obligingly positioning the boats to make sure we saw the wildlife from both sides. It just goes to prove that with excellent guides, fabulous wildlife and amazing scenery, its no wonder we have already sorted out our 2020 holidays with Speyside Wildlife." Franky & David Perry

"Seeing the species we really wanted to see , Orca /Humpbacks/Grey Whales, Black Bears /Grizzlies, sea otters/sea lions /porpoises/dolphins /seals/beavers. The boat trip from Hidden Cove and the boat trip to see the grizzlies were both spectacular!" Elaine & Dick Green

"The Orcas interacting and the Humpbacks tail and fin smacking. The black bears and grizzlies were wonderful. All the boat trips, even the very wet Sea otter tour, were great." Lesley & Peter Clarke

"The British Columbia holiday was filled with delights. As a keen birder, I enjoyed the variety of locations where we saw woodland, wetland and sea birds, and I clocked up a number of new 'life' spots. However, it was the mammals that I really booked the holiday for, and I was not disappointed. Our first whalewatch trip on a gloriously sunny day with flat calm water gave us so many Orcas, some very close to the boat. my 'magic' moment was seeing a pod of Orcas riding the surf behind our boat as we sped along; it was so unexpected, and reassured me that the Orca were not distressed by the boats but could even enjoy them. To see those huge animals leaping above the waves was truly thrilling, and I even managed a short video of one! Our next trip was to meet an entirely different kind of mammal - the cute and cuddly sea otters. How amazing they are, and how adapted to their life. Another fantastic photography opportunity. And then came the Grizzly bear watching trip. I had steeled my self against disappointment, in case the bears were only seen at a very long distance away. How wrong could I be! It was truly fantastic and I shall remember seeing all those bears, ignoring us and going about their lives, as long as I live. All in all the trip was everything I wanted it to be, and I would love to go back one day." Pamela Litton

"Seeing a River Otter swim across the lagoon as we arrived at Hidden Cove.
Seeing a raft of Sea Otters. Seeing a raft of Stella's Sea Lions. Seeing a Grey Whale breach. Seeing the Black Bear casually moving huge rocks looking for crabs.
Seeing a Black Bear looking directly at us from a few yards away when we were safely on a boat!
Seeing 12 grizzlies, sows with cubs, males. Seeing a Beaver swim the length of the lake.
Having a Grey Jay take food from my hand. Seeing humpbacks and orcas. Watching Dalls Porpoises bow riding our boat on the way back to Painters Lodge.
Looking down on the salmon pool at Stamp Falls" Lily & Paul Birkbeck

"Grizzly Bear mum teaching her two young cubs to fish. Grey Whales outing, a superb and knowledgeable guider, and we were rewarded by a young whale breaching twice. As for birds, the George C Reifel Reserve at Delta was superb" Margaret & Mike Betts
|
"Grey Jay at Mount Washington.
Close up of Steller's Sea Lions sunbathing on rocks.
Sea Otter tour for Sea Otter and scenic splendour.
Large raft of Surf Scoter bathed in sun on Stuart Island returning from Grizzly Bear trip" Hilary Rolton

"There were so many highlights on this trip.
Seeing 12 Grizzly bears at very close quarters on one day was amazing. Stood and watched the mother bear teach her little cubs to fish for salmon and loved the expression on one cub's face when he missed!
We saw 5 Grey Whales on one trip, having been advised that 1 would be a good number! One of the whales breached - something Grey Whales do not do apparently!
A group of Dall's Porpoise swam up against the boat after announcing their presence with a graceful, synchronised leap like a team of synchronised swimmers. Watching a Black Bear casually turning over rocks which several grown men would find a struggle to move, whilst keeping a careful eye on us to ensure we didn't encroach on his territory was a joy. The Sea Otters have stolen a piece of my heart - seeing individual ones tied to a piece of kelp and lounging around as if they needed the Sunday papers to complete their life is an absolute joy but I was overwhelmed when we came across a raft of at least 50. What wonderful social animals they are. They peered at us languidly as if slightly bemused at these strange creatures in a boat. A Beaver graced us with its presence and if by order, swam sedately down the pond giving all of us an excellent view. I could go on and on and on - mentioning Steller's Sea Lions, Harbour Seals and numerous birds to name a few other things. This is an amazing experience for any wildlife lover" Jane Nickerson

"We never thought Yellowstone would get relegated to number two, but British Columbia was just so special. Highlights every day, even on travel days. Really good birds but the mammals the real stars of the trip. Magic moment has to be the breaching Humpback Whale, not just once but about 25 times! Add Orcas and Grey Whales so close and even getting covered in Grey Whale 'spit' treat after treat. Then the bears and wonderful views of Grizzlies and close encounters with Black Bears. Raccoon family adorable, beavers turned up on cue, Three species of woodpecker in one view including Pileated. Salmon stunning at Stamp Falls, scenery stunning. Sea Otters to die for and so close - I could go on and on as we have just had the most surreal time - loved every minute. Many thanks due to Roy and Julian for a brilliant double act." Belinda and Steve Batt
